Use a Question Group when you need to organise related questions into a separate section of your survey.
Question Groups are useful for keeping questions with a similar topic or purpose together, making longer surveys easier to structure and giving respondents a clearer path through each section.
You can also use Question Group settings to display several questions on one page, hide the group header, add a navigation button, or randomise all or part of the questions in the group.
How to add a Question Group to your survey
To add a Question Group:
- Open the survey from My Surveys, or create a new survey.
- Go to the Create phase.
- Select Question Group from the available question types.
- Click it to add the group, or drag and drop it into the required position.
Once the group has been added, you can place related questions inside it and arrange them in the required order.
How to set the Question Group label
Enter the Question Group title in the Label field.
You can also type @ to insert an answer from a previous question or a Custom Variable into the Label.
For example, if respondents selected their department earlier in the survey, a later Question Group could use that information in its title:
Your experience in @Department
Use previous answers or Custom Variables when they make the section clearer or more relevant to the respondent.
How to add a description to a Question Group
Use Description when respondents need context or instructions before answering the questions in the group.
For example, you can explain:
- What the questions in this section are about.
- How respondents should answer them.
- Any instructions they need before continuing.
- How the information in the section will be used, when that context is necessary.
You can also type @ in Description to insert an answer from a previous question or a Custom Variable.
How to add an image or video
Enable Image or Video when the Question Group needs supporting visual content.
Add an image
- Select Image.
- Click Choose.
- Select the image from your device.
The image must be in JPG, PNG, or GIF format and no larger than 2 MB.
Add a video
Select Video, then enter the relevant video link in the field provided.
Use media when it provides useful context for the questions in the group rather than only for decoration.
How to adjust the Question Group layout on mobile and desktop
If you add an image to the Question Group, use Layout to control how it appears separately on:
- Mobile
- Desktop
Review both layouts before publishing and choose the position that works best with the Question Group content.
How to display multiple questions on one page
Enable Display Multiple Questions on One Page when you want all questions inside the Question Group to appear together on the same page.
Click Preview to check how the questions will appear to respondents.
When this option is enabled, Hide Group Header also becomes available. Enable it when you want to display the questions without showing the Question Group header.
Note: You cannot use Display Multiple Questions on One Page when the Question Group contains a Payment question or when Logic has been applied to questions inside the group.
If you need to add Logic to a question, disable Display Multiple Questions on One Page or move that question outside the group.
If the group contains a Payment question, move the Payment question outside the group.

How to add a button to a Question Group
Enable Button when you want respondents to click a button before continuing to the questions inside the group.
You can edit the button text under Label.
The default text is:
Continue
Change the Label only when a more specific action would make the next step clearer to respondents.
How to hide question numbers
Enable Hide question number when you do not want question numbers to appear for the questions inside the group.
This changes only how the questions are displayed and does not affect their order or response data.
How to randomise questions within a Question Group
Enable Questions randomization when you want the questions within the group to be presented randomly.
You can choose between:
- Randomize all questions
- Randomize part of questions
These names should remain exactly as they appear in the Porsline interface.
Randomise all questions
Select Randomize all questions when every question should be displayed but their order should vary.
The number of questions does not change. Only their order is randomised.
Display only some questions at random
Select Randomize part of questions, then specify how many questions should be selected from the Question Group.
For example, if the group contains 20 questions, you could configure it so that each respondent sees only 8 randomly selected questions.
This can be useful when you have a larger question pool and do not want every respondent to receive the complete set.
When should you use a Question Group?
Use a Question Group when several related questions belong together as one section of the survey.
It is particularly useful when you want to:
- Organise a long survey into clear sections.
- Display several related questions on the same page.
- Randomise questions within a section.
- Show only a random subset from a larger question pool.
- Build survey paths that direct respondents through different groups.
If you only need to display instructions or context without grouping questions, use a Statement instead.
