How to use Answer Piping in Porsline

Learn how to reuse previous answers to create more personalised surveys, forms and quizzes for each respondent.

A survey or form does not have to show exactly the same text to every respondent. With Answer Piping in Porsline, you can reuse information that someone has already entered and display it later in the survey.

For example, after asking for a respondent’s name, you can insert that answer into a later question or message. This creates a more contextual experience without asking the respondent to enter the same information again.

In this video, we use a simple quiz example to show how Piping works and how dynamic information can be displayed as the respondent moves through the form.

Answer Piping is available in the Free plan. If your workflow also needs to display calculated scores, Score Piping is available with Pro and Enterprise plans.
What You Will Learn

• Collect information such as a respondent’s name.
• Use @ to insert an answer from a previous question.
• Personalise later questions and messages with previous responses.
• Add a Statement when you need to display information without collecting another answer.
• Create a more contextual survey or form experience.
• Understand the difference between Answer Piping and Score Piping.

When Is Answer Piping Useful?

Answer Piping is useful when information collected earlier in a survey can make later questions or messages clearer and more relevant.

Instead of repeating a respondent’s answers or asking for the same information again, you can reference what they have already provided.

Personalise Questions With Respondent Information

Suppose the first question asks:

What is your full name?

Later in the survey, you could use that answer in another question or message:

Thanks, [Name]. How would you rate your experience?

The question remains part of the same survey, but the wording reflects information already provided by that respondent.

Create More Relevant Survey Messages

Previous answers can also help provide context between different parts of a form.

For example, if respondents choose a department, service or product earlier in the survey, a later message can refer to that choice before the next group of questions.

This can make longer surveys easier to follow because respondents can see how later questions relate to information they have already provided.

Display Information Without Asking Another Question

Sometimes you need to show respondents information rather than collect another answer.

In Porsline, you can use a Statement to display text inside the survey without creating a response field.

Combined with Piping, a Statement can include information from previous answers and present a more relevant message before the respondent continues.

Answer Piping and Score Piping

Answer Piping and Score Piping serve related but different purposes.

Answer Piping lets you reuse an answer that a respondent provided earlier in the survey.

Score Piping lets you display a score generated through the scoring features available in Porsline.

The quiz in this video demonstrates both concepts in the same respondent experience.
